Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high
There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby

Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can’t I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why, can’t I?

History of Somewhere Over the Rainbow

The Academy Award winning song was made famous in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, as originally performed by Judy Garland.

In the movie, Dorothy ponders about “a place where there isn’t any trouble,” which she imagines is “somewhere over the rainbow.”

A famous medley remake of the song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World, was performed by Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. The recording was captured in a single take during a spontaneous demo-session in 1988. You and your child will love the ukulele and the dreamy Hawaiian vibes.

Lyrics to Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World Medley by Iz

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh,
Ooh, ooh, ooh

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
And the dreams that you dream of
Once in a lullaby

Oh, somewhere over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
And the dreams that you dream of
Dreams really do come true

Someday I’ll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind, me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me

Oh, Somewhere over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
And the dream that you dare to
Why oh why can’t I

Well I see trees of green
And red roses too
I watch them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Well I see skies of blue
And I see clouds of white
And the brightness of day
I like the dark
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people passing by
See friends shakin’ hands saying
“How do you do?”
They’re really sayin’, “I, I love you.”

I hear babies cry
And I watch them grow
They’ll know much more than we’ll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Oh, someday I’ll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me

Oh, somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
And the dreams that you dare to
Why oh why can’t I, I
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
