HOW ARE YOU RELATED? A Family Relationship Calculator

Do you share a common ancestor with someone? Are you really cousins? Use this calculator to find the family relationship between two people who share a common blood ancestor.

Note:  The calculator only works with a shared parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent.  Relationships between nephews, aunts, and cousins are not calculated. Please refer to our Family Relationship Chart for those relationships.

Family Calculator Instructions

  1. You must already know the relationships to the shared relative.
  2. Enter the FIRST person's relationship to the shared relative.  For example, the grandchild of the shared relative.
  3. Enter the SECOND person's relationship to the shared relative.  For example, the great grandchild of the shared relative.
In our example above, the two people would be first cousins once-removed.
